The Movement for the Humanization of Childbirth in Brazil is a confluence of diverse forms of activisms. Although several meanings could be attributed to the word “humanization”, the core values of the movement are human rights, and evidence-based care. New interpretations of the biology of labour and delivery favour change. The impact of using the evidence-based discourse is restricted by a poorly regulated, paternalistic and medicalized culture. Using the rights and “abuse and disrespect” frameworks create tension in institutional relations, but also brings reflection and some evident change.
